In order to make the most of your use of ACTMAPi, we recommend the following:
Internet Browsers
Map Format and the SVG Plug-In
Screen Resolution
1. Internet Browsers.
The software used to create ACTMAPi has been designed to work best with Internet Explorer. ACTMAPi will work in other browsers, but you may have a reduction of functionality.
ACTMAPi may be used without the SVG plug-in with some limitations in most browsers, including Internet Explorer and Firefox. More Information about the SVG plug-in.
If you are using Internet Explorer, we recommend that you download the SVG plug-in. This will enable you to use the full functionality of ACTMAPi.
If you are using Firefox, you are unable to download the SVG plug-in. However, we are currently working towards making
ACTMAPi fully functional by incorporating the work being done on the Mozilla SVG Project.
Although you are not able to click on a feature displayed on a map in ACTMAPi to view feature attributes, you are still able to see this information by following the steps set out below:
- By clicking on the Legend Group Heading (ie. the text), you are able to expand the group and see all legend entries within the selected group.
- Any legend entry with one of the symbols
,
or
is able to be selected, and its attributes viewed.
- Using the Select by tools,
or
,
you can select one or more features from the map. The feature attributes will be displayed in a new window.
Additionally, if you are using Firefox with Windows, you may wish to use the
IE Tab Add-on, which enables you to open an Internet Explorer window in a Mozilla/ Firefox tab.

2. Map Format and the SVG Plug-In.
ACTMAPi may be viewed using either SVG or PNG formats:
- SVG provides full functionality, but requires a plug-in to be installed on your computer to make all functions available.
The Adobe SVG plug-in has some limitations, and only supports the following systems:
- Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher on Windows 95/98/2000/XP or NT 4.0;
- Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher on Macintosh System 8.51 or higher;
- Netscape Navigator 4.0 through 4.73 on Windows 95/98/2000/XP or NT 4.0;
- Netscape Navigator 4.07 through 4.73 on Macintosh System 8.51 or higher.
If you would like to use the full functionality of ACTMAPi, you can
download the SVG plug-in from the Adobe web site by
clicking the button below.

If you are using an ACT
Government computer on the internal network (which will provide you with additional functions and data sets), you will need to contact
Intact and ask them to deploy the packaged SVG viewer to your workstation.
This installation can be applied to an individual computer or across a group or department. If you require further information about using the plug-in with ACTMAPi, please contact
actmapi@act.gov.au
We recommend the SVG format because it provides more sophisticated interaction with the map, but if speed is more important to you than functionality, you may prefer to use PNG.
- PNG provides limited functionality but does not require a plug-in. ACTMAPi will load maps more quickly using PNG format.
On average, PNG maps will take about half as long to load as SVG maps.

3. Screen Resolution.
The larger your screen resolution, the larger the map area in ACTMAPi will be. If you use a very small resolution, you will
find that the map is difficult to see, and some of the buttons may not be visible.
The optimal resolution for ACTMAPi is
1280 by 1024 pixels. However, this will make other things on your screen smaller, so you may wish to experiment with different
resolutions. You can change the resolution of your computer as follows:
Step 1
Right mouse click on the desktop, and select PROPERTIES from the pop-up menu.
Step 2
Select the SETTINGS tab and change the resolution in the Screen Area section by clicking and dragging the slide bar (see below).
